What's changing on Sutton High Street this autumn

Sutton High Street keeps changing. Here is a round-up of the openings, closures and applications from the past couple of months.

Fat Phill's arrives at 96-98 High Street

Dutch burger chain Fat Phill's has taken 96-98 High Street, a few minutes' walk north of Sutton station. It is one of the brand's three UK sites, alongside Wood Green and Tooting Market, and the menu centres on smashed burgers, sandwiches and chicken wings. Its published hours are noon to 10pm Monday, Tuesday and Sunday, and noon to 11pm Wednesday to Saturday.

Former Argos building to become one large shop

On 2 September 2026, the council approved changes at 219-227 High Street, the former Argos and Home Needs building, which has been empty since March 2023. The ground floor can now become one large shop instead of three smaller units. The applicant is a food retail company, but no tenant has been named. The upper floor already has permission to become shared housing.

McDonald's applies to open 24 hours

The McDonald's on the High Street has applied to open around the clock, with late-night refreshment until 5am and the current delivery-only restriction dropped. Public comments closed on 9 October; check the council's licensing pages for the decision.

Bar + Block closes

Bar + Block Steakhouse on St Nicholas Way closed to the public on 3 September as part of Whitbread's exit from its branded restaurants.

What it means for High Street businesses
